He was supposed to have the day off. That didn't quite happen.

His phone woke up him at nine, and on the other end was his distraught mother. A pipe in his parents' basement had burst, and even though Davin is a mechanic and not a plumber, he was the one she called. Funny how she refuses to acknowledge his magic until she needs to take advantage of it.

His dad's out of town on business, so it was up to Davin to calm his mother and keep the basement from his childhood home from flooding. He sat his mother down on the sofa and turned off the water before heading down to the basement with his tools. He was able to use his magic to cut through the ruined section of pipe and hold up the new one so he could solder it in place, and then he cleaned up the basement as best he could.

He emerged hours later, wet and dirty and in a lousy mood, and his mother demanded he stay for tea before he could leave.

Now he's freshly showered, hair still a little damp at the ends as it sticks up everywhere, and he's wandering through the town's main drag as he tries to decide how to spend his evening. Beer will make an appearance at some point, surely.

He's weighing the pros and cons of pub food when someone brushes by him, and a streetlight glints off of some metal sliding out of the person's pocket. Davin stares at the keys as they fall and wills them to stop mid-air, holding out his hand and sending the keys flying through the air to land gently in his palm.

"Excuse me," he calls out, his Irish accent a little thicker due to his exhaustion. He shakes the keys out, peering out to try and see if he recognizes the person. "I think you dropped these."

[Come meet Davin! He's lived in Siren Cove since he was a kid, so if your character has been around for awhile they may recognize him. All his info is here, but the bullet points are: 22 year old gay Irish witch/mechanic who just wants a damn beer.]

Lara smiled at the young man as he blushed a little. "You're a life saver. My old mechanic a town over just retired and you come highly recommended by my staff." She cocked her head at him and gave him an appraising once over. Honestly she'd expected someone older, especially with the way the people that had recommended him had raved about him, but age was no indicator of prowess or experience as she knew very well. "As long as you treat her like the lady she is, she'll behave for you." she said with a wink.

Davin feels the full weight of her gaze and stands up a little straighter because of it, giving her a charming smile. He almost asks which staff she's referring to, but he doesn't know if it would be proper. He's heard of Heart of Gold, though he's never partaken himself. He probably doesn't have the means, even if it were something he were interested in. He's spotted the business card in pricier luxury vehicles that come through his shop, gold inlay glinting from the leather wallets of businessmen that pull out their black cards to pay him.

Honestly, he's a little curious how it all works, but he assumes that it isn't appropriate to bring up on the street with the person who runs the place. Maybe someday.

"I'm happy to hear that, Miss Quinn." And he is. It's always good to hear that he's done good work that he can be proud of. "I always treat a classy lady like she deserves, with respect and a healthy bit of fear."

He chuckles a little and holds out his hand for a shake. "I'm Davin. It's a pleasure."

[ooc: if i've gotten anything wrong in davin's assumptions about heart of gold (or if he wouldn't even know about it), please feel free to correct me and i'll change the comment! i'm new to the comm and haven't really seen it mentioned, but i don't want to get anything wrong. <3]

Lara smiled and shook it. "Pleased to meet you, Davin. And I see my reputation precedes me just like yours." She said dropping his hand and looking around. "Well, I'll obviously pay you for your work but in the meantime can I buy you a drink to thank you for agreeing to fit me in so quickly? It's the least I can do."

"Ah well, I do love a good night out at Watersong when the mood strikes me." He blinks at the offer and gives her a warm smile, surprised by pleased. "You don't have to buy me a drink, but I wouldn't say no to the good company while I have one. I need them both after the day I've had."

Lara smiled and led the way towards the small sportsbar on the corner nearest them. "Bad day?" She asked.

Davin follows alongside her and does his best not to feel awkward and grimy next to such an elegant older woman. He's clean and he smells good, but there are oil stains on his cuticles and a hole in the knee of the jeans that didn't come artfully distressed, but instead was torn there when he tripped over the stay cat who hangs outside the auto shop.

"Bad week, really. A few weeks ago I got promoted, an' all the guys older than me there, which are all of them, have their panties in a twist over it. They don't want some, quote, dumb kid as their boss."

His tone reeks of bitterness, and he huffs. He kind of hates his co-workers. Tom, the owner, is a nice guy who believes in him, but he isn't around enough to make any sort difference. Mel's an asshole, and Hank acts like homosexuality is an airborne disease whenever Davin gets close. He's going to talk to Tom about maybe hiring some young blood. Someone Davin can get along with, maybe, and who isn't a barely competent asshole.

He realizes that he's been chewing his lip in thought and blushes, smiling shyly over at Lara. She was probably just being polite by asking, but when Davin's asked a question, he sure as hell answers it.

The shy smile aimed at Lara made her squeeze his arm in reassurance. He clearly thinks he's overstepped somewhere but he really hasn't. Lara has always appreciated openness and honesty. She smiles at him as they find some seats at the bar.

"You know...I was 20 when I took over from my aunt in her business affairs. I've had to deal with those same whispers. I'm not going to pretend it's easy but you just have to prove yourself and they'll learn to respect you." She orders a beer for herself and waits for him to order before continuing. "Someone clearly believes in you. Family?" she asks.

His smile turns bright and warm when she squeezes his arm, and he takes a seat at the bar with a relieved sigh. He immediately flags down the bartender to order a pint of Guinness and turns to listen to her as she speaks, hanging on every word and smiling happily. At the mention of family, his smile dims a little, and he shrugs.

"Thank you, that's awfully kind of you, givin' me advice like that." He wrinkles his nose and figures that if she doesn't mind his venting, he might as well take advantage of it. "I've only got my parents here in the states, and we don't really see eye t'eye. They want me to marry a nice Catholic girl an' settle down, but instead I like to sleep in on Sundays, with a man in m'bed if I'm lucky."

He shrugs and nods at the bartender in thanks when he comes over to set down his beer. "They don't hate me or anythin', but I don't really see them unless they need somethin' from me."

Lara nodded. "The archaic ideas take long time to die off for some people." She said before she smiled brightly. "Happily you don't have to live your life by their rules. And I have to say, I approve of your Sunday plans." She took a sip of her drink and cocked her head at him. "So mechanics isn't a family line then?"

"Nope, you sure are right on that one. I'm doing' just fine on my own." He takes a sip from his pint and then shakes his head. "Nah, it's just somethin' that I discovered I was good at, and enjoyed. I like getting my hands dirty, aye? And it's a right good use of my uh, talents."

She doesn't seem to mind his oversharing, but being a witch isn't something Davin feels entirely comfortable just blurting out, even in Siren Cove.

Lara nodded and smiled. "I'm glad that you have found your niche. Too many people do jobs they hate." She tapped her glass at the barman for a refill. "Have you been in town long? I don't think I heard your name before two weeks ago and normally I hear about someone as cute as you very quickly." She teased. "You must have been hiding away."

"Aye, it's not the most glamorous o' jobs, but I like it." He looks over at her and blushes when she calls him cute. "I've been here since I was a kid, but I jus' started at Coastside about six months ago. Before that I was at no place worth mentionin'."

He finishes off his own pint and looks over at her with a warm smile. "I'm not one for hidin'. Maybe I'm jus' not as cute as you think."

And then he gives her his most innocent, wide-eyed and pouty expression, going so far as to bat his eyelashes.

Lara waved a hand at him and snorts a laugh. "You know exactly how cute you are. And so do my girls. And boys." She grinned. "You make an impression. If I'd known about you, I'd have made you an offer, but you're clearly better off where you are."

Davin chuckles and then blushes a deep pink, wrinkling his nose a bit. He's cute, sure, but he doesn't really feel that he's anything more than that, so her words genuinely surprise him.

"Really? They've mentioned me?" He's really not fishing; he's just a little taken aback. He's not even sure who her girls and boys even are, but he's sure that they're as beautiful as she is, or at least nearly, and he can't imagine anyone like that noticing him. "Well, that's certainly enough t'make my day."

He laughs softly and pulls the food menu close, cheeks still pink as he looks it over.

"Heart of Gold employees are usually so quiet about non-clients, so when they talk about someone in particular I pay attention." She smiled. The waiter came and she placed her order and waited while Davin did the same. "You should feel flattered. My people have great taste."

"Oh, trust me. I'm very flattered." He laughs and orders a chicken sandwich before turning towards her with his fingers curled around his beer. "They can talk t'me, y'know. I don't bite."

He gets a gleam in his eye and grins. "Unless they're into that."

"Some of them are, absolutely. They usually get paid for that kind of thing, though." Lara said with a wink. "But on their own time...well, I'll pass on the message."

Davin can't help but to flush and grin back at her. He's having so much fun talking to her, and he feels so cool just being in her presence. "Hell, I'll bite 'em for free."

He laughs, obviously kidding, and reaches for his pint again. "Well, if any of 'em ever want t'slum it with a broke yet eager t'please mechanic, I'm available."

Lara snorted a laugh. "I think that might actually make at least three peoples week." She nudged him with her shoulder and nodded at his food as it was placed in front of him. "Eat. You'll need your strength if one of mine comes at you."

Davin blushes a bright pink and ducks his head, smiling as he peeks over at her. "Careful, you're spoilin' me. I'm not used to so many compliments. You're gonna shock my system."

His smile softens into something fond and genuinely pleased. Davin is starved for affection and reassurance, due to a lack of much of it growing up. He's not particular conscious of this, but if it was presented to him, he probably wouldn't deny it. "But thank you."

He gives her a lingering look and then smiles to himself as he picks up his sandwich to take a bite. His night's looking up after all.

"You're welcome." Lara smiled at him. He blushed a lot for such a little amount of contact. "And some shocks are good shocks."

Her food was set in front of her and she began to eat, watching him as she did. For some reason, her protective instincts were kicking in and he wasn't even a siren. Maybe he was another latent, a siren that hadn't yet discovered he was one. There'd been enough of those lately. She didn't want to push him though. He'd tell her in his own time, or not. That wasn't her choice to make.

"I can be pretty shocking," Davin says with a wry smile, chucking at his own joke. He finds himself wanting to share his secrets with Lara, but he has no idea how to bring it up out of the blue. Maybe if her phone dies, he could charge it up with a touch of his finger.

He takes a few more bites of his sandwich and looks over at her with a bright smile. "So, does this mean I don't have to wait in line to get into Watersong anymore? You know, because we're such good friends now."

He winks and finishes off his pint, considering before gesturing for a refill.

"I think I can probably put your name on the list. If the work on my car goes well, of course." She said giving him a playful wag of her finger.

When he orders another drink, Lara orders one for herself. "So how are you shocking? Give me an example."

"I will treat her as if she were my own," he says solemnly, one hand over his heart. When she asks for an example his smile falters a bit, and he looks around the bar to see if anyone is watching. He's not ashamed of his magic, and he knows this whole town is full of them, but he's always been a bit wary of displaying his own powers. He doesn't think Lara will care, and he's pretty sure she's a siren herself, so he takes a deep breath and nods.

"Okay, watch." He jerks his chin at a fork a few feet away from them up the bar and Davin lifts his hand, pulling at the metal with his mind and drawing it towards him like a magnet. The fork jumps up off the bar to land neatly in Davin's hand, and he presents it to Lara like a kindergartner with a new drawing, cheeks pink and eager for approval. If she liked that, he'll show her that he was being literal when he said he could be shocking.

Lara jumped when the fork leapt across the bar. She hadn't been expecting that. "That. That wasn't what I was expecting." She said, taking the fork from his hand, turning it over in her fingers. "You're a witch?" She asked smiling gently.
